Darmstadt's Art Nouveau Baths

Formerly known as the municipal baths (Volksbad) and later as the central baths (Zentralbad) today the baths are a wonderfully atmospheric place to go to swim and to enjoy a sauna and a true sense of well-being.

Built in 1909 at the heydey of Art Nouveau the baths originally had two pools and an area for treatments such as foot baths and steam baths with strict segration into to areas, one for men (Landgraf-Georg-Straße) and one for women (Lindenhofstraße).

During the second world war the baths suffered sever bomb damage and the women’s wing was totally destroyed. After the war was over the women’s section was rebuilt but it was not until 2005 that renovations began to restore the Art Nouveau baths to their former glory. In addition to technical modernisations being added the baths which are now a listed building have been lovingly restored with huge attention being paid to every detail and with care to ensure that they now meet today’s bathing needs.
