Darmstadtium Science and Congress Centre

Meet the new congress and event centre: the darmstadtium – the science and congress centre opened in December 2007 – set in the heart of Europe in the centre of the bustling Rhine-Main conurbation and right in the heart of the Darmstadt "City of Science" and capital of Europe’s space industry.

Why the darmstadtium?

The darmstadtium is named after an ion. In 1994 the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt successfully synthesized lead and tin creating an element known as darmstadtium which has the number 110 in the periodic table.

Thus the name darmstadtium not only inextricably links the new event centre with the city of Darmstadt but it also emphasises the city’s international standing in the world of science. Darmstadt is the only city in Germany to have an element named after it. In the international scientific community the element "darmstadtium" enjoys almost more fame than the city itself!
